How Entrepreneurial is Your Beat Making(?)

Author: John Clokie

This is your opportunity to get two things right. Combining personal satisfaction and making money. And in that order. Creative entrepreneurship is concerned with turning your ideas into something profitable with a belief first and foremost that they are worth something! Being on the internet technically allows you to scale from budding artist to commercial star. But hold on...

You're launching yourself into an uncertain future. You're not dealing with something tangible, just an idea and something you really want. That's what separates the standard business entrepreneur from the creative one. It has to be a balance between your ideas and feelings about being creative, and a shrewd eye on the business books. You need to be fuelled by at least two things. All the other detailed stuff will come with practice. It just mustn't be the other way round.

All this goes with being independent. No desk bound bureaucrats found here! You want to change things not leave them the way they are. You need to make your own rules not follow them. These are some of the essentials of all types of entrepreneurship, but creative entrepreneurials of various stripes step even further from the standard line. Depending on what you are doing this can just be a state of mind hidden behind a desk or some real steps out "there". The advantage of beat making is that financially it can be done part time until you find out whether you can make it or not.

If you want to feel more powerful, think of yourself as a creative destructive! It sounds like a contradiction, but by creating something new you could be contributing to the destruction of something else. How inventive is that!

Statistically you should be bright and care about what you do otherwise you wouldn't be taking on this venture. You'll have to handle a wide range of endeavours including managing your own time and abilities because your working environment will be unpredictable, together with your income. Instinctively you'll have to network and think for yourself. Keeping several balls in the air at once will be a constant requirement.

At least with creative beat making there will not be an air of artistic purity floating around. It's something that is immediately connected to street culture and can be shared almost anywhere, so that's one middleman you won't have to worry about on your road to fame and fortune!
